What is a debt collector?

A debt collector works usualy for a business which is specialised in debt recovery, or sometimes they work alon as a ‘mercantile agent’ or a ‘recovery specialist’. They are usually people who have some background in accounting, investigations and some come from a legal background as service processors and double this role into their business. They need to have a fairly diverse range of skills including research and investigation, document drafting, forensic accounting and analysis and like any business they need good client relationship management skills because a debt collector is basically involved in a service industry where clients and customers are the lifeblood of the business. Normally a debt collector deals with all of the non-legal aspects of the debt collection process but if the matter eventually develops into a legal issue, the debt collector will then have to refer the matter onto a lawyer to finalise the matter. Also, often by the time that a matter has reached the stage of legal proceedings the debtor is in such deep financial trouble that they may actually be insolvent. In the case of an insolvent debtor it is very fiddicult to get back the full amount of the debt because the creditors basically shuffle into a long line and try to jump in front of each other to get at the debts.

How can a debt collector help me?

Obviously, if someone owes you money it can be a very painful experience because you have put work and effort into serving them or outlayed money to provide them with a good or a service and then they haven’t paid you which is particularly gauling especially if you are owed interest on the debt and if you include the interest component of the time value of money, the value of a debt outstanding to you can build up very quickly. It is very important to make sure that your interests are protected by hiring a good debt collector.
